Nature Challenge

Several of my friends challenged me to participate in the #7daynaturechallenge. 
The idea is to post a different image on Facebook every day for 7 days. 
For this challenge, I decided NOT to post any of my Lake Ontario images but to show other things I've been creating. 
Because I live 10 feet from the shore, I post a lot of the Lake so I wanted people to see the diversity of images I create.

Happy New Year 2016

If you're reading this, I thank you for your interest in what's happening here on the blog.

I've decided it's time to be more serious about posting and sharing the photographic fun that goes on in my life. When I'm not creating photographs, I'm interacting with photographers and reading about how to improve my techniques. You might be interested in hearing some of that.

Since the advent of Facebook and other internet sharing sites, there have been many days when it felt ridiculous to continue in this chosen profession. We are inundated with a plethora of images - EVERYWHERE! Some are spectacular and most are not. All seem to get the same "applause" and one wonders whether there is any reason to work at excellence in the craft.

I am one of the lucky ones who, nearing retirement, won't have to worry about the future of Professional Studio Photography as a sole source of income. Unlike many of my colleagues, I am able to take the types of work I enjoy most and don't have the overhead of a Studio at this time. It's quite a wonderful feeling to create work for one's own enjoyment and hope that others enjoy it as well. The best way for me to continue will be to create, share and let the work speak for itself. I also hope that by sharing, I will help others who are interested in learning more about their craft.

Currently I have a piece in the Members Exhibition at the Rochester Contemporary Art Gallery which continues through January 17th. Here are a couple of photos from the Opening Reception and the Artist's Talks. I wasn't able to make the reception but was told everyone had a grand time.

 

  

My piece is the Harley Wheel there in the corner. Thanks to the RoCo staff for taking photographs during the event.

I decided not to give a "talk" this year and will rectify that when submitting my work next time. I participated in the talks last year and, although I find it difficult to talk about my work, I feel it's important to share thoughts about the process. I was very thankful there were people who cared to hear what I had to say.  Here's a photo of my talk at last year's event. The black and white piece next to my head was mine and it sold during the exhibition.

As much as I enjoy creating art for exhibition, I enjoy creating portraits for clients equally as much. It's wonderful to work with people who understand the importance of quality portraiture that will be handed down from generation to generation. Portraits will become treasured heirlooms for your family. I treat each one as a work of art. I'll share some of my portrait work here as the year goes on.

Now I'm on to the next exhibit at Image City Gallery. Please read the next installment which will be posted this week to get details about the Opening Reception. Perhaps you can visit both galleries to see the work of the many talented artists while they are up.

Conversations with Creatives - Part Two

This is the second part of the discussion with Carol White Llewellyn. She gave it the interesting title of "Photography in the Age of the Selfie".

Interview

I had the distinct pleasure of being invited to be interviewed and also participate in a panel discussion about photography for a local television show. Carol invited four photographers to join her in the studio and conversation will air in two shows. One contains the individual interviews and the second, a discussion about "Photography in the Age of the Selfie".

It was a interesting experience to hear the variety of ideas and creativity from my colleagues and also see how different each of our photographic styles was.

The episode with all of the individual interviews will air on RCTV (channel 15 or 98.5 in Rochester)  Monday, November 16  and Wednesday, November 18 at 7 PM. The panel discussion will run the following two Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 PM (November 23, 25, 30 and Dec. 2)

Gallery 96

I just picked up the images that were displayed during a recent exhibit at Gallery 96 in Bushnell's Basin. 
The theme was The Erie Canal and there were many interesting photographs shown.

24th Annual Members Exhibition - The Days the Artists Spoke

I was privileged to be part of the Members Exhibition at the Rochester Contemporary Art Center which is open until January 18, 2015. http://www.rochestercontemporary.org/

As part of the opening, all participants were invited to give a short talk about their artwork, process or just introduce themselves to the viewers. I was lucky to be there on Friday night among many of Rochester's amazing artists.

My entry, "Searching for Shelter" is a digital photograph printed on canvas paper and is offered for sale during this exhibit. This is the first time I've given a talk so I was just hoping it made some sense.  

My talk starts at about 21:35. I'll let you decide if I accomplished that.  

The Burnt Sienna Southwest Tour

I had an a terrific opportunity to travel to Phoenix, AZ for the PPA Imaging USA Conference. As President of the Professional Photographers' Society of NYS, I helped represent our great organization as we were presented the Buddy M. Stewart Humanitarian Award. 

Last year, under the guidance of then President Owen Kassimir, PPSNYS members volunteered their time and talent to restore damaged photographs for those in New York who endured Hurricane Sandy. We were honored to be the recipients of this award and had a wonderful time at the Conference.

While we were out west  ( my first time west of the Mississippi ) we decided to explore the beautiful areas we've seen in photographs but never experienced in person. We visited, Tucson, Cochise County, the Grand Canyon, Santa Fe and everything between there and our home in New York. 

I have many photographs to look through but am posting just a couple here. It was an amazing trip!

All Settled

We've finished the move - DeLapa Photography is back to one location on Lake Ontario and Treasure Trove Vintage is open in a wonderful new boutique space at 121 Park Avenue.

I love working from my home studio because I can take advantage of the beautiful north light and enjoy the scenery while working on the computer. It's the best!

I'll also be helping out at Treasure Trove Vintage and I always enjoy time with my sweet daughter. What a nice way to spend the day.

We're moving!

We've really enjoyed being a part of the Honeoye Falls community for the past two years. We've met some wonderful people and will continue to serve those who are interested in working with DeLapa Photography. We're just a phone call or email away, so don't hesitate to contact us for you photographic needs.

Around the Neighborhood

I live on Lake Ontario just outside of Rochester, NY.  

Because the lake is accessible from my front yard, I take many photographs of all that goes on here. 

Just across the road, however, is beautiful farmland. In the winter, it's fun to wander around and capture all the barns, old and new, and whatever scenery I come across. Here's one I liked.

Watching Winter

Living on Lake Ontario gives us the opportunity to see all kinds of weather changes. At this time of year, we see the snow bands move down the lake and at times they shift on land and dump snow on us. The colors change as the clouds move and reveal glimpses of the sun. It's always very interesting!

I took these through our front windows since the temperature was in the teens with quite a brisk wind. I didn't even have to take my slippers off!

Winter Finally Arrived

We've been waiting patiently to find the right days to hold this special event since we got everything set up!  

It's going to be so much fun. 

Bring your little cuties in to have their portrait taken in our pretty snow covered forest. 

Don't worry, it's nice and warm inside. 

Collaboration

Way back in June, my friend, Kathy Hensel Porter,  brought her dear little Tessa to the Studio for portraits. Both Tessa and Kathy were in need of a business portrait since there was a book in progress.

It wasn't initially the plan to use Tessa's cute face for the cover photo.  After trying some other ideas, Kathy determined that it would make her happiest to have her very own, long time friend, be the one to welcome you when reading her stories in "Love Always Wags It's Tail".

The book was launched on Amazon just before Christmas and is now on the top 100 list! You can download to your Kindle here. The paperback version is now out!  If you're a dog person, this is just the book for you!
